MEXICO CITY, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Games of the XXVII Olympiad, also called the Millennial Games, were held in Sydney, Australia, between Sept.15 and Oct.1, 2000, with 10,651 athletes from 199 delegations.
Its inauguration ceremony was focused on the unity of fire, representing Australia's climate, and water, for Sydney's place by the ocean. This became clear when Australian runner Cathy Freeman climbed stairs toward a large pool of water, with the cauldron harboring the Olympic Flame at its center. The cauldron was then lifted up a waterfall to take its place above the Stadium Australia and its 110,000 spectators.
Besides Freeman, who won the 400m in front of her home crowd, the female hero of the Games was American Marion Jones, who took home the gold for the 100m, 200m and the 4x400m relay, while winning two bronze medals for the 4x100m relay and the long jump.
Sadly, in October 2007, Jones confessed to having used illegal substances in Sydney and forfeited her five medals.
Birgit Fischer from Germany took two gold medals in kayaking, to become the first woman to ever reach eight gold medals across six editions in the Olympic Games.
British rower Steven Redgrave continued his haul, winning his fifth gold at five consecutive Olympics.
Sydney also the entry of China into the top three in the medal ranking, finishing third in total medals and in gold medals won, behind the U.S. and Russia, after finishing fourth behind Germany in Atlanta 1996.
In Sydney, China saw a record haul with 28 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 15 bronze medals.
Of these, seven athletes repeated their gold medals from Atlanta, while China found new success in sports such as fencing and cycling.
Tao Luna won China's first gold in the 10m air pistol competition, while divers Xiong Ni and Fu Mingxia took home the gold, the fourth straight such victory for Fu.
Finally, the Chinese male gymnastics team ended a 47-year drought and was crowned with the gold, while the female hockey team finished fifth in its first Olympics, despite beating two of the favourites, the Netherlands and Germany.

CHICAGO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) grains futures settle higher on Wednesday with soybean futures prices closing double-digits higher, on damaging crop-weather in Argentina.
Corn futures also rose, on track to extend their three-session winning streak as investors staked out positions ahead of annual rebalancing by commodity index funds. Wheat firmed on support from worsening crop conditions.
The most active corn contract for March delivery rose 4 cents, or 1.12 percent, to 3.5975 dollars per bushel. March wheat delivery added 12 cents, or 2.95 percent, to 4.185 dollars per bushel. January soybeans rose 20.25 cents, or 0.9 percent, to 2.04 dollars per bushel.
An easing in the dollar, after Tuesday's 14-year high, lent additional support as it makes U.S. commodities cheaper for overseas buyers.
Speculators stepped in to pull soybeans higher despite expectations of huge crops in key exporters Brazil and Argentina.
Crop ratings fell in December in parts of the U.S. Plains that endured a cold and dry month, including major hard red wheat growing states Oklahoma and Kansas, data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture after Tuesday's market close showed.
Concerns about another cold snap in key growing areas were allayed by forecasts for snow, limiting the gains in the wheat market.
Corn has found support at the turn of the year from expectations that funds will rebalance portfolios in favor of the cereal.
In the outside markets, the Brent crude oil market is $0.84 per barrel higher, the U.S. dollar is lower, and the Dow Jones Industrials are 57 points higher at 19,939 points.
Jack Scoville, Price Futures Group vice-president, says that the US Dollar is sharply lower and looking like a top is possible.
"That is lifting all commodities to some extent today. Then, there is the South American weather with floods in Argentina and the dry weather in northern Brazil. That could mean much less from both countries, both corn and soybeans. Good price action today and it looks like a good close is coming," Scoville says.
Rescue workers from Syria's White Helmets group - the subject of an Oscar-nominated documentary - will not attend this weekend's Academy Awards ceremony because of intensified regime bombing and a rejected passport.
